Florida Man Arrested for Owing $83,000 in Child Support

On July 8, the sheriff’s office in Ulster County, New York, arrested a Florida man on charges of failing to pay owed child support arrears of at least $83,000. Mohammad Hussain, a 51-year-old man from Orlando, was extradited  to Florida to face the charges. He was held in the county jail on a $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond.

Hussain had two warrants out for his arrest, one from 2012 and the other from 2013, both issued by Ulster Town Court and Ulster County Family Court. The arrests were assisted by the county’s Social Services Department, the district attorney’s office, the Department of Homeland Security Investigations and the URGENT Task Force. According to Ulster County police, additional unspecified legal proceedings against Hussain are pending in other courts.

In Florida, there is no statute of limitations on pursuing child support arrears. According to state statutes, collection of arrears can be enforced through a number of different mechanisms. These include driver’s license suspension, contempt of court citation, and the placement of a lien on the payer’s property. The Florida Department of Revenue and affiliated agencies also have the power to take more drastic measures, including seizing the obligator’s bank account to secure payment or suspending passports. Our state takes these issues very seriously, and there are a number of ways you can seek the child support payments owed to you.

If you are experiencing difficulties collecting child support from your former spouse or partner, you may need the assistance of a skilled family law attorney. Speak with a trusted Fort Lauderdale lawyer for further guidance.
